WORMING

DOGS

Regular worming of your pet dog is important to protect not only your dog from the negative health effects of internal parasites but also you and your family.

All wormer only – must be on either yearly Heartworm injection or monthly spot on product such as Revolution or Advocate

NOTE:  Heartworm is NOT an intestinal parasite – it is a mosquito borne parasite which infests the lungs, heart and blood vessels of your dog.  Some all wormers are effective against it but some are not.  Drontal is not.

Dog owners need to either treat their adult dogs with all wormers monthly which INCLUDE Heartworm (such as Milbemax, Interceptor or Sentinel) or treat for Heartworm separately by having either a yearly injection or by using the monthly spot on flea control product such as ‘Revolution’ or ‘Advocate’ which are also effective against Heartworm.

Rural Dogs

In this area this means anywhere outside of suburban Canberra/Queanbeyan where scavenging is possible – such as Womboin, Burra, Carwoola, Captains Flat, Yass etc.  Anywhere near where sheep once grazed that is now populated by either wild dogs or Kangaroos.

Worming Schedule:

As per the table above until 6mths of age.

Then:

Due to the serious risk to human health of the Hydatid Tapeworm (combined with the parasites relatively short lifecycle) dogs living in rural areas who may have access to animal carcasses (livestock or Kangaroo) should be wormed every 6 weeks from 6mths of age.   They do not need an ‘all wormer’ each time but they do need a ‘tape wormer’.   Drontal is an all wormer (which includes tapeworm).   A simple ‘tape wormer’ registered for use against Hydatid Tapeworm can be used every 2nd worming.
